Keep your family safe from infection

Open wounds leave skin more vulnerable to infection. Bacteria is one of the most common causes of skin infection and can be introduced by treating the wound with unclean hands, not cleaning the wound effectively or leaving the wound open. Follow our 6 steps to help prevent skin infection.

6 steps to prevent infection

Wash hands before touching the wound

  • Wash your hands thoroughly to ensure you do not transfer dirt or bacteria from your hands to the wound. Touching a wound with dirty hands increases the likelihood of infection.

Clean the wound

  • Ensure the wound is clean by rinsing the area with clean running water to remove any dirt or bacteria and pat the area dry with a clean paper towel or gauze.

Apply Savlon Antiseptic

  • Once the area is clean and dry, apply Savlon Antiseptic to cleanse the area, reduce the risk of infection and aid the natural healing of the skin.

Dress the wound to protect it

  • If appropriate apply a plaster, bandage or gauze dressing to the wound to help keep it dry, covered and protected from dirt or bacteria.

Keep the wound clean and dry

  • It’s important that you keep the wound clean and dry for the first 24 hours to help the area heal. Protect the wound when you wash to keep it dry.

Apply a new dressing daily

  • Dressings can quickly become grubby, so it’s important you change the dressing every day and apply Savlon Antiseptic to the area to help keep the wound clean. Ensure you wash your hands before changing your dressing to help protect against infection.
